Hello my beautiful students!

The English language, being one of the most widely spoken languages around the globe, is particularly beneficial to master. One of the best ways to fast-track your English language proficiency is to incorporate it into your daily life.

Here, we offer 8 practical tips that non-native English speakers can use to make English a seamless part of their everyday routines.

1. Embrace English Language Media

One of the most effective and enjoyable ways to learn English is through media consumption. Swap out your usual books, newspapers, TV shows, and music for English equivalents.

  • Books: Start with children's books or graded readers as they often employ simpler language and shorter sentences. As you progress, you can slowly transition to young adult books and eventually, to adult novels.
  • Newspapers: Reading English newspapers like "The New York Times" or "The Guardian" not only boosts your reading skills, but also keeps you informed about international affairs.
  • TV Shows and Movies: Watching English-language films and series exposes you to a variety of accents, slang, and cultural contexts. Turn on English subtitles if you find it challenging to follow the dialogue.
  • Music and Podcasts: Listening to English songs and podcasts is an entertaining way to learn new vocabulary, understand native pronunciation, and even pick up on cultural nuances.

Teacher Caroline's Tip: On many popular streaming and video apps (i.e. YouTube), you can slow down the speed of the videos are too fast for you to understand.

2. Make English Your Default Technology Language

Change the language settings on your phone, computer, and other digital devices to English. It may feel a bit overwhelming initially, but over time, this immersion will significantly improve your language skills. This method exposes you to a wide range of vocabulary, from technical terms to daily life expressions.

3. Use Language Learning Apps

Language learning apps like Duolingo, Babbel, or Rosetta Stone can be a valuable addition to your daily routine. Many of these apps offer engaging and interactive activities that help enhance your grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation skills. Plus, these apps can be accessed on the go, fitting seamlessly into your daily commute or downtime.

4. English Practice Through Hobbies

Take up a hobby that involves the use of the English language. Join a book club that focuses on English literature, or an international online gaming community where the main language is English. Engaging in activities you love while using English makes the learning process more enjoyable and less like work.

5. Practice English Through Social Interactions

If possible, engage in conversation with native or fluent English speakers. It could be your colleagues, international friends, or even language exchange partners you meet online. If you're a bit shy about speaking English, remember that most people are happy to help and admire your effort to learn their language.

6. Join an English Language Course

Consider enrolling in an English language course, whether in-person or online. Courses often offer structured learning and opportunities to interact with teachers and peers. This structure can help keep you motivated and provides regular, dedicated time for you to focus on learning.

Teacher Caroline's Tip: For one-on-one classes, I recommend joining iTalki.com. On iTalki, you can take lessons with community tutors and professional teachers and meet learners around the world.

8. Write in English Daily

Incorporate English writing into your daily tasks. Write your grocery lists, to-do lists, or journal entries in English. You could even start a blog where you document your English learning journey. This not only helps reinforce vocabulary and grammar structures but also improves your written communication skills.

Remember, learning English is a marathon, not a sprint. Be patient with yourself. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small, and don't be discouraged by mistakes. They're part of the learning process. The key is to make English an integral part of your life, as natural as breathing, eating, and sleeping.

By incorporating the tips listed above, you can start living your life in English, thus accelerating your journey to language proficiency.

Happy practicing!
