#16: Indonesia's New Digital Nomad Visa

Have you ever wished to work remotely abroad? In this episode, we’ll be discussing Indonesia’s new digital nomad visa. You can find a full transcript of this podcast episode in the description. 

The country of Indonesia is planning to release a new visa that will allow digital nomads from around the world to legally work remotely long-term in the country. This new visa will allow digital nomads to stay in Indonesia for 5 years, outdoing similar digital nomad visas currently offered by other countries, such as Barbados, Portugal, Italy, just to name a few. It is not clear at the moment when the government of Indonesia plans to formalize this new digital nomad visa. In the meantime, it is still possible to visit Indonesia on a temporary visa for 30 days, which can be extended for a total of 60 days. Would you ever work remotely from Indonesia? 

Let’s take a look at some grammar:

1. Digital nomads: digital nomads are a group of people whose jobs are fully online, allowing them the flexibility to travel the world and work at the same time.
2. Remotely: to work remotely is the ability to work online, without having to go into an office. In this case, we are talking about digital nomads who work remotely because they work online.
3. Outdoing: "to outdo" is used when something is more successful than something else. In this case, we are talking about the digital nomad visa in Indonesia outdoing, or being better than digital nomad visas in other countries. This is because the visa in Indonesia will be for 5 years, which is much longer than similar visas in other countries. 
4. To Formalize: when something is formal, or is formalized, it means that it becomes official or more standardized. At this time, we are not sure when the new visa type will be formalized, or officially available. 
5. Temporary: "temporary" is an adjective, which is an antonym, or means the opposite of permanent. Currently, you can travel to Indonesia as a digital nomad on a short-term, or temporary visa, that lasts for 30-60 days. 
6. To Extend: "to extend" means to increase something, usually in time or distance. For example, it is possible to extend the current short-term visa to a maximum of 60 days.
