#15: Adele's Comeback

This episode is for all of you Adele fans out there, as we’ll be talking about Adele’s first public concert in five years! You can find a full transcript of this podcast episode in the description. 

Adele made a comeback by having her first public concert in five years on Friday, July 1st. The concert was held in London’s Hyde Park, the largest park in London. About 65,000 fans came to watch Adele belt out her biggest hits, such as “Hello,” “Rolling in the Deep,” and the James Bond theme, “Skyfall.” Adele was set to have a residency in January this year in Las Vegas, but canceled it for unknown reasons at the last minute. Overall, Adele was emotional to be back on stage and the fans loved every second of it. What’s your favorite Adele song?   

Let’s take a look at some grammar:

1. To make a comeback  - “to make a comeback” is a phrase we use to say that someone has successfully returned to something they used to do. In this example, Adele has made a comeback by returning to the stage, as she always used to have live concerts in the past before stopping for five years.
2. To belt out - “to belt out” is a phrase used primarily for singers that have a strong presence with their voice. If you’ve ever heard Adele sing, you know that she ‘belts out’!
3. Residency - in this case, “a residency” is a noun that means a type of special program or training. You’ll commonly hear about nurses and doctors being in a residency program. A residency program should not be confused with being a resident somewhere. Being a resident somewhere, means you live there. For example, being a resident in or of France means that you live in France permanently. 
4. At the last minute - “at the last minute” is a common phrase we use to exaggerate or emphasize when something is done too late or with short notice. In this case, we are saying Adele canceled her Las Vegas residency at the last minute because she canceled it 24 hours before the first show.
